Government Opens Faith School Floodgates
A recent report in the Times Educational Supplement revealed that the government has plans to simplify the process by which schools become ‘faith’ academies. Previously becoming a faith school and an academy required going through two separate processes, but this is being consolidated into just a single-stage application. With this barrier of extra consultation removed more schools who are considering moving to academy status may be enticed to become faith-based as well, tempted by offers of funding from the Church of England.
The AHS has written to Micheal Gove condemning these plans, highlighting that it further removes parents from key decisions on the character of their local schools and handing it to the Church of England. We urge you to write to your MP and Michael Gove on this issue, to prevent an expansion of faith schools that no-body wants.
