Description
Bristol Atheist, Agnostic and Secular Society was founded in April 2006, and has been healthily evolving into an active and diverse society, with bigger events every year. Members can be religious, fervent Dawkins-worshippers, or simply people who haven't made up their minds, but what unites everyone is an interest in developing their perspectives, and arguing about... well, about everything!
The AASS exists to provide a forum for secular discussion on topics which are sometimes inflammatory within religious circles, in an environment where religious ideas are given no special exemption from criticism. Topics of interest range from science and philosophy to politics and the media. There is usually one event every week of the term; either a social, a talk or a discussion at the pub. The society also likes to collaborate with other societies, and over the years has held events with LGBT, the Christian Union and the Pagan Society. It is only £2 to join, and generally this membership is returned in the form of wine, biscuits, and barbecued delights! The AGM is held on the first Tuesday of March, and is followed by a training day, where the new committee is broken in to their responsibilities.
The AASS are fairly new members of the AHS, having somehow failed to join in previous years... As the hosts of the third AGM for the AHS, we hope to forge strong bonds with all the other member societies and grow more and more each year.
Bristol are currently onto their fifth annual committee. Past Presidents of the society include Rosie Simpson, Barnaby Dawson, Chris le Sueur and Damian Rumble. Bristol joined the AHS in February 2010, immediately becoming one of the most active members. AHS Rep and former Vice President and Social Secretary Natasha Barrett is the AHS's Head of Education. Treasurer and former Academic Secretary Michael Paynter is also the AHS's South West England Rep, whilst founding member Katie Barr, who is now doing a PhD at Leeds University, is the AHS's Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Rep.

AHS South West Convention
Facebook Event### Postponed ###
The Atheist Agnostic & Secular Society here at the University of Bristol has long been the only established non-religious student society here in the Southwest. To that end, we're hosting a small convention on 11th Feb in an effort to bring potential future societies together for some talks, discussion and general training on how to start and run a society. The event will be run in conjunction with our affiliates at the AHS.
The event is open to all students of any University within the South West to come along and here from AASS Committee members and AHS representatives what it takes to run a non-religious student society on campus.
Talks include:
Free speech on Campus
Starting a society 101
Talks, discussions and how to approach speakers
... and probably more
